The Crooked River Lighthouse was built to replace the Dog Island
Lighthouse. The Dog Island Lighthouse had suffered from beach erosion
and several storms. A hurricane in 1873 destroyed both the tower and
the Lighkeepers quarters.

The Crooked River Light was used as a rear range light for a section
of the deep channel that lies just west of Dog Island. The tower, two
dwellings, oil house and other outbuildings cost $40,000 to build.
Today only the tower remains. The two Lighthouse keeper's houses were
sold and moved from their original location. |
